Stanley Friedman Graphic

Temple College will host “The Works of Stanley Friedman” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8 in the Jackson-Graeter Backstage Theatre at the Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center.

The concert will feature an instrumental piece entitled “Monument” and the vocal cantata “Sojourner Truth.”

“Monument” is a multi-movement work inspired by the removal of Confederate statues in Memphis, Tennessee. “Sojourner Truth” is a work for soprano and instrumental ensemble. It is based on the writings and speeches of Sojourner Truth, who was born into slavery and, after gaining her freedom, became an influential symbol for the anti-slavery movement and the Civil War itself.

Friedman’s compositions have been premiered by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Memphis Symphony, lʼEnsemble Intercontemporain, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Chamber Music Society, the Northwestern University Orchestra, the Wilma Smith & Friends Chamber Series (Australia), the Italian WonderBrass, the Canadian Brass and by major soloists and ensembles at music festivals worldwide. He is a four-time winner of the International Trumpet Guild Composition Prize. His solo trumpet work “SOLUS” has become a world success, with multiple CD recordings and programming on recitals and trumpet competitions in many countries.
