Local chapter is hosting a community Open House Nov. 1 on the Temple College campus

A local chapter of Toastmasters International is hosting a noon-hour Open House Nov. 1 on the Temple College campus. The goal is to introduce members of the community to the longstanding organization designed to help people develop strong leadership and public speaking skills.

The Open House, which runs from noon to 1 p.m. in Temple College’s Newton Science Building, Room 301, will include snacks and the opportunity to meet with chapter members.

“Toastmasters is open to adults who are seeking opportunities to develop their personal and professional skills in communication and leadership in a supportive environment that offers encouragement, mentoring and quality interactive training,” said D. Kirkland, Temple College speech professor and active member of the local chapter.

The local Toastmasters chapter – known as “Big T Toastmasters” – was chartered in 1984 and has served many who’ve moved along the organization’s many curriculum “pathways” to develop their skills. The Toastmasters Pathways learning experience was developed around five core competencies: public speaking, interpersonal communication, strategic leadership, management and confidence.

Training in these areas is completed individually online; however, the meetings provide opportunities for members to put their skills into practice.

Community leaders, business professionals, adult college students and educators can all benefit from the Toastmasters experience, Kirkland said, adding that the Temple College campus is the ideal “home” for the group’s weekly meetings.

“I speak for the whole group when I say how thankful we are to Dr. Christy Ponce, the Temple College Board of Trustees, administration, staff, faculty and students for embracing Toastmasters as an opportunity for professional development and community outreach on our campus. I believe this partnership will benefit the college, Central Texas community, and its citizens.”
