Temple College is offering Polysomnography Technician (sleep technologist) training Sept. 12-Nov. 9. Scholarships and grant opportunities are available, and the course could be free for eligible students.

Classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.


Polysomnography technicians, also known as sleep technologists, perform overnight sleep assessments used to diagnose various sleep disorders. This course will give students the knowledge and skills needed to become a sleep technologist. Topics covered include anatomy and physiology, sleep disorders, sleep medicine and polysomnographic technology. The program includes an externship experience.

Upon successful completion, graduates will be eligible to sit for the Certified Polysomnographic Technician (CPSGT) Certification Exam offered through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Collect and analyze physiological signals from electroencephalograms (EEG), electrocardiograms (EKG), electromyograms (EMG), respiratory flow and effort sensors.
  • Establish proficiency in scoring the brainwaves of all sleep cycles for both adults and pediatric patients.
  • Identify the exact placement locations of the EEG leads and effectively prepare the sites for lead application.
  • Learn and demonstrate the theory, preparation and recording of an overnight polysomnogram.
  • Demonstrate the skill and ability needed to perform basic CPAP titrations using a PAP machine during an overnight polysomnogram.
  • Recognize, mark and document the physiological activities that determine sleep-related events, various sleep syndromes, and Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD).
  • Operate, calibrate and perform technical troubleshooting for machine malfunctions.
  • Create sleep reports and reliably analyze the reported data.

Requirements for admission

Individuals must meet the following requirements for admission into the Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician program:

  • Access to a computer and internet.
  • Have earned a high school diploma, GED, or High School Equivalency Certificate.
  • Be a minimum of 18 years old.
  • Have a photo ID and a Social Security card.
  • Be willing to complete a criminal history background check and drug screen (individuals with any infractions that would prohibit state certification will not be admitted into the program).
  • Be willing to provide evidence of required immunizations (Tuberculosis skin test, flu shot, Hepatitis B series Vaccine, Tetanus, 2 Measles, Rubella, 1 Mumps, and 2 Varicella, or positive titer).
  • Prior to the beginning of the externship, students must:
  • Be willing to provide the results from a drug screening test (wait on the instructor to request before completing).
  • Provide proof of completion of the CPR for Healthcare Providers course (available through BCE).
  • Have paid their tuition in full.
  • Class is limited to 15 students; registration closes when the limit is reached.
